During the 1970’s, in Pullman, Washington, at Washington State University, the most popular basketball camp west of the Mississippi, was Cougar Cage Camp. Anyone who attended or worked the camp undoubtedly remembers this famous saying……”If it’s to be, it’s up to me”. The head coach at WSU was George Raveling, and his camp, along with the saying, became nationally famous.
Last week, Coach Raveling was selected as part of the Basketball Hall of Fame, Class of 2015. If anyone doesn’t know much of Coach Raveling’s history, look it up. Head Coach at WSU, Iowa and USC. Director of Basketball at Nike. Friend, advisor and mentor to literally hundreds, probably thousands of kids, parents and coaches. The Godfather.
It has been a great honor and privilege to have known Coach for the past 15 years. His selection into the Hall is well deserved. No ego, always curious, always learning, always concerned about YOU, great sense of humor, leadership guru, and caretaker of the game.
I could, (and have), sit and listen to coach tell stories about the game and its coaches for hours. Lefty, John Thompson, Coach Knight, Tark, Coach Cal, NBA coaches, college and pro players, business titans, leadership legends…..Coach Rav told stories with great lessons.
If you don’t know of his connection with the “I Have A Dream” speech, look it up. It is one of the best stories ever.
Coach, I will always be thankful for the opportunities you have given me. Congratulations on your selection. It WAS to be, and it was because of you……………
